I thought I'd share with you the story of my first photo exhibition and its installation in the Tourist Office at Sainte Mère Eglise last week.
I was contacted a few weeks ago by the lovely Lucie of the Tourist Office as they'd seen my photos of the Lantern release that had been organised on Utah Beach last year. As part of this year's D-Day commemorations the Lantern release is going to happen again and they were asking permission to use on of my photos for this years program of events for the entire Landing Beaches. I agreed and then Lucy asked whether I might be interested in being the next photographer to have an exhibition in their gallery. There wasn't much time to get and exhibition organised but I agreed and we decided on « Normandie, si jolie » (Normandy, so beautiful) as the theme.
I was asked to include as many photos as possible the featured their area of Normandy so one breezy Sunday I went with two of my children to enjoy and photograph the beaches at low tide. It was too early in the year to include the local countryside as the leaves weren't yet out and too late to feature the marshlands as they'd dried out for the season.
The big day arrived and the boot of my car was packed with canvases, framed prints, tools and labels to be attached and also the drinks and nibbles for the guests and press that had been invited to the opening.
As it was a Wednesday lunchtime before a Thursday Bank Holiday I was able to pick up my eldest son from Lycée in Saint Lo and he came to help me install the exhibition. I'm very grateful to him for his hard work as it would have been much harder without him. He's no longer keen on having his photo taken by me (well he's a teenager, it's to be expected) but I sneakily took a quick photo or two of him helping me.
As I'd chosen canvases and framed prints in a wide range of sizes much of our afternoon was spent deciding on where to position the images. We finished just in time to prepare a few drinks and nibbles for the press and guests.
Yes, I've been choosy about the photos I'm showing here. I'm showing them in Black and white to not give too much away about the exhibition. For those who follow me on my social media accounts quite a few of the images featured in the exhibition have been seen on screen but I invite everyone to see the difference between seeing a small image on screen and seeing a 'real' photo printed at up to 115cm wide and hung in a gallery space.
