I've lived, worked and enjoyed French life in Normandy with my family since 2004. One of my traditions as a teenager in England was to watch the Tour de France on television. I've known of the plans for our department of Manche to host the first three stages for a couple of years now. Although I've been working for both the departmental and regional tourism for a few year, taking promotional photos, I decided to capture the 3rd stage 'just for fun'. It wasn't for work, just for the pleasure of experiencing the event in a village a few miles from our home in the Normandy countryside. We had a wonderful time as a family and with friends. The wonderful atmosphere, the free gifts from the sponsors and of course seeing the cyclists.
I can't begin to imagine how much time and preparation it takes to organise the Tour de France: Tourism, sponsors, gendarmes, councils, routes, hotels, planning and of course the teams and their riders. Today has opened my eyes and I'm now fascinated by the whole event.
Here are my images of the fun of the 'caravanne' (the sponsors parade) and the cyclists as they passed through Champrepus on the 3rd stage between Granville and Angers.
