There's something quite unusual to see in Bayeux but for only a few more weeks. You all know the world famous Bayeux Tapestry depicting William the Conqueror and the Battle of Hastings housed in the Bayeux Museum but did you know there is also an impressive tapestry depicting story-lines from the famous Game of Thrones television series ?
It was commissioned in 2017 by the series maker HBO and Irish tourist board to promote the northern Irish locations where the series was filmed and now attracts many GOT fans. It was created in the style of the Bayeux tapestry with each 11 metre section representing one of the series. It was open to the public in the Ulster museum and it was only by chance due to a tweet that the Bayeux museum learnt of its existence. Bayeux contacted the Irish tourist board and entered into a discussion about whether they would lend it to France to put it on show to the visiting public here alongside the original tapestry. Happily, they agreed and it has been in Normandy since mid-September, but it's not here for much longer. If you're a fan of game of thrones or are just intrigued to discover the story or a modern creation like the Bayeux Tapestry now is the time to visit as it is only on display until the end of the year.
And yes, there's even a Throne!

I was lucky to be invited by Normandie Tourisme to visit and photograph the tapestry during a festive evening, where my daughter and I first discovered the sound and light show at the Bayeux Cathedral before walking across the courtyard to discover the GOTTapestry, before enjoying products from a select handful of local producers and the medieval themed virtual reality company CAHEM, that my twelve year old particularly enjoyed!
Here are my photos...
